MEDIA RELEASE The Hon Warren Truss MP Minister for Transport and Regional Services

03 June 2006 082WT/2006

The Australian Government Minister for Transport and Regional Services, Warren Truss, today announced more than $440,200 from the Regional Airport Funding Program to upgrade basic security measures at another three regional airports.

Mr Truss said that the Australian Government was determined to do all it can do to protect the security of the many people and businesses in regional Australia who relied on their airports for transport services.

"These security upgrades will increase confidence in the security of our regional airports and will provide a boost for local communities and their regions," he said.

Since 10 March 2005, 152 regional airports have been designated as security-controlled airports and have a Transport Security Program approved by the Australian Government.

This round of funding will provide basic security upgrade measures at:

Ñ Cunnamulla Airport, Qld - $240,222;

Ñ Winton Airport, Qld - $155,145; and

Ñ Lord Howe Island Airport, NSW - $44,851.

Mr Truss said transport security programs were tailored to local conditions and this funding would help regional airports increase and improve security measures, such as fencing, lighting, CCTV and access control.

"Broadening the security base will reinforce travellers' confidence in the Australian aviation industry which is already regarded as one of the safest and most secure in the world.

"The Australian Government is continuing to work closely with industry to implement a range of measures to increase security for the regional aviation industry," he said.

The Regional Airport Funding Program will provide $35 million to increase security measures at up to 147 eligible regional airports across Australia.

Mr Truss said today's funding brings the total amount of funding approved to date for 114 airports to more than $27.1 million.

Mr Truss acknowledged the support of the Australian Airports Association in negotiating funding arrangements for the regional airports.
