As expected there was very little focus on regional and rural Australia in Opposition Leader Bill Shorten’s Budget reply speech this evening.

In his 35 minute address to the Parliament, Mr Shorten made nothing more than a fleeting reference to regional Australia.

This epitomises the Shorten approach to regional Australia. There is no plan.

Only the Liberal Nationals Coalition team has a long term plan to help secure the essential services people need in regional and rural Australia.

We are putting money into major infrastructure improvements, through the $75 billion Infrastructure Pipeline - which includes the $3.5 billion Roads of Strategic Importance (ROSI) package.

We are continuing to invest in new ideas and new infrastructure in regional and rural Australia through a $200 million third round of the highly successful Building Better Regions Fund, and an additional $22.5 million for a fourth round of the Stronger Communities Programme.

This is on top of new measures to deliver better healthcare services in regional Australia through the $550 million Stronger Rural Health Strategy, improved child care services and the announcement of 14,000 additional high level home care places across Australia to support older Australians.

Regional Australia sees through the Opposition Leader, and his fake gestures when it comes to their future.
