Ley resignation welcome but cannot be in vain

Leader of the Australian Greens Dr Richard Di Natale welcomes the resignation of Health Minister Sussan Ley over her misuse of taxpayer funds and calls on the Government to adopt the Greens’ proposal for a national Independent Commission Against Corruption and independent workplace umpire to help regain the public’s trust.

“Minister Ley let the community down and she has done the right thing in resigning from the frontbench. Let’s hope that her resignation isn’t simply a public relations move by the Government, but actually serves as an impetus for the kind of reforms demanded by the public.

“The Greens welcome the Prime Minister’s proposal to strengthen the weak reforms proposed by his Government earlier this week, especially his proposal for an independent parliamentary expenses authority, which goes some way towards what the Greens have been advocating for nearly a decade.

“But unless this sits within the broader framework of an independent national ICAC, it will not be able to insure an end to the constant drumbeat of scandals to come out of this Government. If we want Sussan Ley to be the last minister to resign over expense rorts, then the Government needs to adopt The Greens’ legislation.

“If Sussan Ley thinks the community is ‘annoyed’ now, just wait and see what happens if they don’t sort themselves out before the next scandal drops.”
