GP Super Clinic for Shellharbour

The Rudd Government has signed a contract with the Illawarra Division of General Practice to establish the $2.5 million Shellharbour GP Super Clinic.

The Member for Throsby, Jennie George, welcomed today’s announcement and said she looked forward to construction starting in late 2009. Ms George said the Illawarra Division will now commence approval process for development of the facility and work on architectural design of the Super Clinic.

“The Shellharbour GP Super Clinic will be a modern purpose-built facility, located in Shell Cove. The facility will bring together general practitioners, practice nurses, allied health professionals, specialists and pathology services,” said Ms George.

“The clinic will have a strong focus on acute care, preventative care and chronic disease management. It is anticipated that acute care services provided at the GP Super Clinic will take pressure off the Shellharbour Public Hospital Emergency Department”.

“The GP Super Clinic intends to bulk bill GP services for all patients under 18 years of age, as well as patients who are pensioners or health care card holders”.

The Illawarra Division of General Practice is an independent general practice organisation that represents and supports general practice to improve the health of the Illawarra community. The Chief Executive Officer of the Illawarra Division of General Practice is Dr Andrew Dalley.

The announcement follows a community consultation held in Shellharbour last year and attended by the Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon and Member for Throsby, Jennie George.

The Minister for Health and Ageing Nicola Roxon said, GP Super Clinics will play an important role in improving frontline health services in communities like Shellharbour and Shell Cove.

Ms Roxon said, “GP Super Clinics are a top priority for the Rudd Government and I thank the community and local health professionals for getting behind the Shellharbour GP Super Clinic.”

GP Super Clinics are a $275 million commitment of the Rudd Government, providing primary health care services when and where they are needed.

They are a key part of the Government’s plans to improve Australia’s health care system.
