THE HON. WARREN SNOWDON MP Minister for Defence Science and Personnel

Monday, 16 February 2009 020/2009

The Hon. Warren Snowdon MP, Minister for Defence Science and Personnel, today visited Townsville based Defence personnel to thank them for their work during the recent Ingham flood relief efforts.

“More than 62 per cent of Queensland has been in flood, destroying homes, businesses and infrastructure; leaving people without food, clothing or a place to stay. And as it always does, the Australian Defence Force responded

quickly to the needs of the local people,” said Mr Snowdon.

The main source of assistance that Defence provided was in the delivery of critical fuel and food supplies by air.

Aviation fuel for emergency services helicopters and ration packs for those stranded by flood waters in outlying areas helped keep the relief effort running smoothly.

Queensland Emergency Services coordinated the effort, employing Defence assets where they would be most effective.

Royal Australian Air Force Caribou aircraft from No. 38 Squadron and Army Black Hawk helicopters from the Army’s 5th Aviation Regiment provided aviation support.

Speaking from RAAF Base Townsville, Minister Snowdon praised the professionalism of the aviators who conducted the short notice tasks so successfully.

“As the flood waters recede, the hard and heart breaking task of clean-up begins, and I know too that our fine men and women of the ADF are equally ready to assist. Thank you for your fine work, and your dedication to serving the needs of our nation.”

Army engineer and Emergency Support Force elements remain on standby, ready to move if called on to ensure the isolated residents of central and north Queensland receive support when and where it is needed most.
