Raising flag on community pride

A civic reception, flag raising ceremony and family day are some of the activities happening in Mount Gambier during NAIDOC Week celebrations from July 6 to 13.

The theme for this year’s NAIDOC Week Celebrations is “Our Children, Our Future”.

Tauto Sansbury Chairman of the Patpa Warra Yunti Regional Council, which covers the South East region, said NAIDOC Week was a chance for local residents to join in a celebration of the oldest living culture in the world.

“Certainly it is an opportunity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to reflect on our history, our survival and at the same time showcase the good work being done in our communities, by our organisations and at the individual level,” Chairman Sansbury said.

“We invite the wider community to join us, take part in NAIDOC Week activities and at the same time gain a shared understanding of our hopes and aspirations for our children.

“This year’s NAIDOC theme highlights the importance of ensuring our children have the right to good health, education, an adequate standard of living and opportunities to lead happy and fulfilling lives.

“Each of us has a role to play in building a world fit for our children and make it a place where they can grow to adulthood in health, peace and dignity.

“Let’s teach our children about their culture and proud heritage of struggle and achievement.

“Our children are our future - we must teach them well,” Chairman Sansbury said.

In Mount Gambier activities have been organised by the NAIDOC planning group supported by the South East Aboriginal Partnership.
