THE HON IAN MACFARLANE MP Minister for Industry

22 November 2013

Australia’s first and largest interactive science centre tomorrow celebrates 25 years and more than nine million visitors since opening in 1988.

Minister for Industry, Ian Macfarlane, congratulated Questacon on reaching the milestone.

“Questacon took up the challenge to engage and excite Australians about science 25 years ago, and it has delivered outstanding results ever since,” Mr Macfarlane said.

“It is now reaching its second generation of young people and has delivered over 100 million hours of inspiring science experiences across Australia and around the world.

“Most importantly, it makes science fun and gets the thumbs up from the thousands of school kids who stream through its doors each year.

“Australia needs to encourage our next wave of scientific talent to stay globally competitive, and Questacon plays a crucial role in helping us do that.

“Questacon nurtures the scientific curiosity that will inspire tomorrow’s Nobel Prize-winning discoveries and scientists to propel our nation forward,” Mr Macfarlane said.

Canberra’s Questacon Centre is a multi-award winning tourist attraction featuring eight galleries with more than 200 interactive exhibits.

It was opened on 23 November in 1988 as a joint Australia-Japan Bicentennial Project. Japan contributed half the $19.64m construction cost as a gift to Australia.

Questacon also delivers user-friendly science lessons via outreach programs, travelling exhibitions, and digital videoconferences, in schools and communities nationwide.

“Questacon has already inspired two generations of young Australians to explore science in a hands-on and practical way. I’m sure many of them have gone on to pursue science as a career as a result, and because of that our country is a richer place,” Mr Macfarlane said.

“I look forward to Questacon inspiring a whole new generation during its next 25 years.”
