Gonski school funding up in the air

20 November2013

With only six weeks to go until the Australian Education Act takes force, Australian Greens spokesperson for schools Senator Penny Wright says funding for schools nationwide is disarray, with the Education Department unable to state funding figures for states and territories.

In Senate Estimates late this afternoon it was also revealed:  Department officials said no deal has been made with the Queensland Government, despite comments by the Qld education minister  Of the signatory states, Victoria has not provided an implementation plan

Comments from Senator Penny Wright, Greens spokesperson on schools

“The Coalition Government has proved no better at handling school funding than the previous government. Despite the fact there’s only six weeks until the program starts, the Coalition seems to have no idea what money is going where.

“Parents, teachers and schools deserve to know what to expect in the coming year.

“It’s vital for the future of our nation that needs-based funding is put in place across the country, but what funding will go to Western Australia, Northern Territory and Queensland remains completely unclear”

“I was also disappointed at the lack of time given to question the Department about this very important reform and how it will be affecting Australian students across the country.”
