Brendon Grylls: right man for the time

DEPUTY Prime Minister and federal leader of The Nationals Warren Truss today paid tribute to outgoing WA Nationals leader Brendon Grylls, who has announced he is stepping down from the leadership and the WA ministry in coming weeks.

“Brendon came along at a time when the WA Nationals were at a low ebb,” Mr Truss said.

“His resilience and determination in leadership restored the WA Nationals and, in the process, gave to regional WA the iconic Royalties for Regions program.

“While I was campaigning across WA during the recent state and federal elections, you could not help but be struck by how The Nationals brand is synonymous with Royalties for Regions.

“It has become a defining policy for The Nationals... not just in WA, but throughout each state and, indeed, federally with our $1 billion National Stronger Regions Fund.

“He was the right man for a difficult time and he delivered for the regions.

“Brendon did not shirk the hard choices. At the 2012 state election he vacated his safe Wheatbelt seat of Merredin, which he’d held since 2001, opting to take on Labor in the far more electorally challenging Pilbara.

“Exhibiting true character, he put his career on the line for the chance to pick up a seat for The Nationals. He won in a cakewalk.

“Brendon is a true champion of the regions. He has made a real difference to the people of WA who live outside its capital city.

“I, along with my Nationals colleagues, wish Brendon and his family good health and every happiness for the future.”
