TRAVEL DOCUMENTS SIMPLIFIED

Entry documents for travellers entering Australia will be simplified from today, the Minister for Immigration and Multicultural Affairs, Philip Ruddock and the Minister for Customs and Consumer Affairs, Warren Truss, announced today.

One card will now replace the present two documents - the Immigration Passenger Card and the Customs Travellers Statement.

Mr Ruddock said the new inbound document was a simpler, more convenient and traveller friendly way of collecting information for border clearance.

“The new card will provide the required immigration information for all incoming passengers and will incorporate declarations relating to Customs, Quarantine, the environment and currency,” Mr Ruddock said.

“Supplementary questions on the reverse side of the card will provide the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the Office of National Tourism and other agencies with valuable statistical information on who travels to Australia and why.

“At the same time the text and design of the card for travellers departing Australia have also been simplified.”

Mr Truss said the new arrangements are part of the planned refinements to assist with the smooth movement of passengers through Australian airports particularly during the time of the Sydney 2000 Olympics and as passenger numbers generally increase.

“The new simplified entry documents, combined with new dedicated channels for Australian passport holders through Customs at Australian airports, will improve the overall passenger flow,” Mr Truss said.

“Passengers arriving into Australia can expect a more efficient and smoother welcome as a result of these measures which the Federal Government is implementing.”
