Tanner Welcomes NSW Healthy Eating Initiative for Truckies

The Federal Shadow Minister for Transport, Mr Lindsay Tanner, today welcomed the initiative of the NSW Labor Government to fund the Healthy Eating Program developed by local heath service organisations in Wagga and Finemore’s Transport.

“For some time now, the Greater Murray Health Service has been funding a program to improve the eating habits and opportunities of truck drivers. Better eating by truckies will improve their health, reduce fatigue and ultimately improve road safety.

“Several weeks ago the National Office of the Transport Workers Union advised me that this highly innovative and successful program was without funding from 30 June this year until the beginning of next year when I am assured the industry will take over its funding.

“Last week I approached the NSW Minister for Transport and Roads, Carl Scully, to see if it was possible for the NSW Government to fund this program until next year so I am delighted to see Minister Scully’s announcement in Wagga today that will ensure the ongoing viability of this program.

“I would like to congratulate all those involved in the program for their efforts so far and in particular Vanessa Jones, who has led the project, and Lawrie Smith who has been its champion from the truckies point of view.

“A Beazley Labor Government will continue to support the Trucksafe program developed by the road transport industry. But I think today’s announcement is a timely reminder that good occupational health and safety outcomes for road transport workers are a critical component of ensuring that our roads are safe.”
