INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT STATUS DECISION IS GOOD NEWS FOR CANBERRA

The Federal M inister for Territories, Alex Somlyay has conveyed the news to the Canberra business community that Canberra Airport has been officially designated as an International Airport, with restricted use.

He was commenting on the decision announced by his colleague, the M inister for Transport and Regional Development, Hon Mark Vaile MP.

"This designation has been actively sought by the private sector in the ACT. In particular I know the decision will be welcomed by the Canberra Business Council and the Australian Capital Region Development Corporation.

Canberra business has argued strongly for the new designation to allow for direct international flights, to boost the ACT's economic opportunities" M r Somlyay said.

He emphasised in accord with M inister Vaile's announcement that Canberra would be a restricted use facility as customs resources are provided only on an 'as required' basis.

M r Somlyay noted some concerns about aircraft noise from flight paths over the Jerrabomberra area, confirming that Airservices Australia has introduced from IM ay 1998 new procedures for jet aircraft arriving at Canberra which should give some relief to affected residents. Jet aircraft arriving after 8pm will land from the north, weather permitting for a twelve month trial period.

"The Federal Government and the C hief M inister o f the ACT, Kate Camell have worked closely with the business community in the lead up to this important decision for the region.

"I hold the very strong belief that the Canberra Airports Group will be proactive in making the most o f the new opportunity now in place for the international flights to come through Canberra," Mr Somlyay said.
