Travel Advice - Federal Republic of Yugoslavia

12 October 1998

Australian citizens in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY) are advised to leave immediately.

The advice to leave is given in light of the apparent lack of progress in the talks with the FRY Government over the weekend, and the increased possibility of a NATO decision to authorise airstrikes against targets in the FRY in coming days.

Australian citizens who choose to remain in the FRY are urged to consider their circumstances carefully and take appropriate measures for their own welfare.

The Australian Government has authorised the departure of non-essential staff from the Embassy in Belgrade. As a result the Embassy will only be able to provide limited assistance in urgent cases.

For further information contact the Australian Embassy in Belgrade - telephone (381-11) 624 655. Information may also be obtained from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Canberra - telephone (02) 6261 3305.
