SENATE ECONOMICS REFERENCES COMMITTEE

Inquiry into operation of the Australian Taxation Office

Tomorrow the Economics References Committee will commence the public hearing stage of its inquiry concerning the operation of the Australian Taxation Office. Mr Michael Carmody, Commissioner of

Taxation and Registrar of Child Support will appear before the Committee at a public hearing commencing at 9:30am in Committee Room 2SI, Parliament House, Canberra. Subsequent public hearing dates andwenues are yet to be determined.

The inquiry into operation of the Australian Taxation Office was referred to the Committee on 24 June 1998, with the following terms of reference:

• The performance of the Large Business and International Division, including, in particular, the High Wealth Individual Project;

• Compliance by the ATO with the Client Settlement Guidelines; and

• Allegations of infiltration of the ATO by organised crime.

Initially the Committee was ordered to complete its inquiry by 20 August 1998, however, given the high level of interest in the inquiry, the Committee will seek an extension to this date.
