Inquiry into the Role of TAFEs

Public Hearings Sydney and Brisbane — 18-19 March

Dr Brendan Nelson, MP, Chairman of the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Employment, Education and Training announced that the committee would hold public hearings for its inquiry into the appropriate roles of institutes of TAFE and the extent to which they should overlap with universities in Sydney on Wednesday, 18 March 1998 and Brisbane on Thursday, 19 March 1998.

The purpose of the inquiry is to clearly identify the appropriate roles for Institutes of TAFE and the extent to which they should overlap with universities. The committee aims to produce recommendations for government action that would enhance TAFE’s capacity to meet community expectations in relation to those roles.

“TAFE has served the vocational educational and training needs of both young people and adults. It has also provided valuable ‘second chance’ educational opportunities for adults. The committee wants to examine TAFE’s position in relation to its traditional

and emerging roles” said Dr Nelson.

The schedule of inspections and meetings, including lists of witnesses, is attached.
