Christmas for the troops 2012

“Christmas time is when most spend extra time with families and old friends” Federal Member for Murray, Dr Sharman Stone said.

“It is important to remember those whose duties mean they won’t be able to spend Christmas with their families and friends. This includes thousands of Australian Defence Service men and women who are serving on operations far from home.

“I encourage everyone in the Murray electorate to show their support for our troops by sending them a care package, a letter or donating to one of the many organisations that support our serving men and women.

“You can send a package to our service men and women on the front lines, free of charge, through Australia Post, with packages weighing no more than 2kg.

“It is also a great comfort to include a letter of support to the troops. Include a stamped self addressed envelope or email address so they can respond back to you” Sharman Stone said.

“Parcels should be addressed to An Australian Defence Member. The mailing address and further details, including what to send and what is not a good idea to send, can be found on my website at

“You can also donate to the RSL’s Australian Forces Overseas Fund. The RSL provides care packages to Australian troops as well as Australian Federal Police personnel twice yearly, and your support would contribute to this great programme.

“My website gives more details of the RSL’s Australian Forces Overseas Fund. Alternatively donations can be made to Legacy ( or Soldier On ( to support personnel who have been wounded on operations and also family members who are suffering from the death of their soldier.

“Last Christmas some 10 tonnes of Christmas parcels were distributed to personnel overseas. I urge all aas many as possible, including our schools to again dig deep and support our serving men and women” Sharman Stone said.
