Statement from Senator Sarah Hanson-Young on Nauru pay conditions

While reports of terrible conditions on Nauru continue to roll in, we have also heard about the poor wages being paid to employees at the detention centre.

“We have known for some time that detainees on Nauru are facing terrible and inhumane conditions, but today we’ve heard that the employees at the centre aren’t even being paid reasonable wages when compared with their Australian co-workers,” Greens immigration spokesperson, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.

“With some Nauruan employees being paid as little as $4 an hour, just 10% of the wage of Australians working beside them, there is understandable frustration at the inept and discriminatory practices of this Australian Government.

“These pay conditions seem more in line with something Gina Rinehart would advocate than wages sanctioned by the Australian Government.”
