Unions unhappy about cuts to textile industry program

The ACTU supports the action of textile workers in Canberra today, who are rightly

concerned that a program which was important to their industry has been cut.

The government's decision to reduce funding to the Textile, Clothing and Footwear

Structural Adjustment Program is disappointing and will mean textile workers have less

support while their industry faces up to a difficult period with the high dollar.

ACTU President, Ged Kearney, said:

"This has been a very good program - assisting workers to find alternate employment, and

helping the industry develop or redeploy skills.

"Unions had worked hard with the government to develop these programs.

"It is a shame to see the government cutting back services which will help people who

have been made redundant to find new employment.

"Ultimately, it will be a counterproductive move, and we call on the government to re-instate funding for the program."
