THE HON DR SHARMAN STONE MP Federal Member for Murray

Monday 29 Oct 2012

Congratulations Vanessa Robinson

Local hero Vanessa Robinson, who lost her two sons due to carbon monoxide poisoning in their Mooroopna home two years ago, was at the weekend awarded the Courage Gold Medal at the Pride of Australia awards.

Federal Member for Murray, Dr Sharman Stone, who nominated Vanessa, has congratulated her on the great win.

“Vanessa went through an unimaginable nightmare in 2010. She lost 8 year old Chase and 6 year old Tyler and was herself overcome and disabled by the fumes.

“Investigations found a faulty gas wall heater, generating lethal carbon monoxide fumes into their rented home.

“This is not where the story stopped for Vanessa. Along with the boys’ father, Scott, the Chase and Tyler Foundation was established to raise awareness about the dangers of this ‘silent killer’ which has no odour, taste or colour.

“I pushed a private members bill through the Federal Parliament, calling for better information and regulated safety checks on all gas appliances. This received bi-partisan support and has now been put to the states via the COAG process.

“Vanessa and Scott in the meantime became the faces and voices of a gas industry and public advertising campaign, urging the public in the meantime to take safety into their own hands and get gas appliances checked.

“Local gas equipment licensed plumbers now report substantial increases in gas checks of home appliances, and in boats and caravans” Sharman Stone said.

“While there have continued to be some deaths in Victoria, there is no doubt Vanessa’s work has saved lives.

“Vanessa continues to work full time, but devotes all of her non-working hours to developing the Chase and Tyler Foundation. Her aim is to have every home fitted with a gas detector.

“Carbon Monoxide poisoning is deadly but preventable” Dr Stone said. “I would urge locals to make sure their gas appliances are operating as they should.”
