The Hon Wayne Swan MP Deputy Prime Minister and Treasurer

The Hon Anthony Albanese Minister for Transport and Infrastructure

24 October 2012

Today’s release of the Bruce Highway Action Plan is welcome and will be given consideration as negotiations continue with the LNP State Government over the details of our next five-year Nation Building Program scheduled to begin in mid-2014.

As we work together to write the wrongs of the previous Howard Government, the challenge for the Newman Government is to be sincere and to keep the political games out of it.

The fact is the Federal Labor Government has significantly increased funding to an unprecedented $2.8 billion over six years. To put that into perspective: the former Howard Government put in just $1.3 billion over twelve years.

All up, we’re investing more than twice as much in half the time.

What’s more, this year alone we’re providing $332 million while the Newman Government is putting in only $83 million - and right now hundreds of workers are onsite rebuilding 158 kilometres of highway.

Importantly, when the State LNP Government makes reference to their additional $1 billion commitment, it is worth noting the actual funding they have included in their Budget.

2012/13 (m) 2013/14 (m) 2014/15 (m)

$10 $10 $80

This means, only $20 million would have been put on the table before the Newman Government is next due to face an election.

What’s more, in the recent Budget the Newman Government scrapped approximately $900 million projects.

While everyone acknowledges the need to always to do more to improve the Bruce, the Liberals and Nationals in Queensland are not in a position to lecture following their record.

If the LNP State Government Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney genuinely believes Queensland is being “short-changed” now, then he must have been beside himself with rage every time the former Howard Government brought down a budget.
