Senator WHEELDON (Western AustraliaMinister for Repatriation and Compensation) - Another Bill provides that environmental impact studies should be made in any case. In fact, the amendment is quite unnecessary. But a certain question of principle is involved in that we do not wish to establish the precedent of Bills making provision for environmental impact statements when it is intended that in any event a proposed Act will provide that this requirement should apply. Not only is the amendment unnecessary, but it could give rise to the idea that there were certain Acts of Parliament to which this requirement did not apply, whereas in fact it will.

Amendment negatived.
