Senator Greenwood asked the Minister representing the Minister for Labor and Immigration, upon notice:

(   1 ) Did the Prime Minister and the Minister for Overseas Trade jointly state on 18 July 1973 that any person who might lose his job as a result of the changes flowing from the 25 per cent reduction in tariffs would be entitled to receive, as special readjustment assistance, a weekly amount equal to his average wage in the previous six months until he obtains, oris found, suitable alternative employment.

(2)   If the answer to ( 1 ) is in the affirmative, has any person or organisation on his behalf applied to receive the payment which the Prime Minister and the Minister for Overseas Trade stated would be his entitlement.

(3)   How many applications have been made on behalf of other persons and what total sum of money has been paid.

(4)   Under what statutory authority has such money been paid.

Senator Bishop - The Minister for Labor and Immigration has supplied the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

(1)   Yes.

(2)   Yes. As at 2.8.74, the latest date for which comprehensive statistics are available, 4,262 persons had submitted claims for special readjustment assistance as a result of the 25 per cent tariff reduction and subsequent structural change decisions such as the tariff reduction relating to the Consumer Electronic Components and Equipment industry.

(3)   No formal applications for special readjustment assistance have been made on behalf of other persons. Any enquirers on behalf of other persons would be advised that the workers directly concerned are required to make their own applications for assistance. The total sum of money paid under this scheme to 2.8.74 was $443,757.08.

(4)   Payments are made from funds under the control of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet and appropriated under Division 922 in Appropriation Bill No. 2 of 1973-74.
