Senator CARRICK (NEW SOUTH WALES) - My question is directed to the Minister for Foreign Affairs. Is it a fact that the Prime Minister invited the Government of the People's Republic of China to play a more active role in South East Asia? If so, did the Prime Minister discuss the implications of such an invitation with the countries of South East Asia before issuing the invitation? If so, what was the response of the various countries concerned?

Senator WILLESEE - Not to my knowledge did the Prime Minister ask the People's Republic of China to play a greater role in South East Asia.
