Senator TURNBULL (TASMANIA) -My question is directed to the Minister representing the Minister for Social Security. It concerns his reply to a previous question with regard to the abolition of the means test within the life of one parliament or 2 parliaments. I would like the Minister to clear this matter up, because I will have a very personal interest in it after next year. Is it proposed that the means test will be abolished in the life of one parliament or in the life of 2 parliaments?

Senator Douglas McClelland (NEW SOUTH WALES) - I did inform Senator Wilkinson earlier that my impression was that it was to be in the life of 2 parliaments, but I am reminded that in the Budget Speech delivered in August the Treasurer said:

We have promised to abolish the means test on age pensions payable to residentially qualified persons 65 years of age and over within the life of the Parliament
