Senator JESSOP - My question is addressed to the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs. Can the Minister inform the Senate of the reasons surrounding the resignation of Professor Strehlow from the Institute of Aboriginal Studies? Is it a fact that, according to a Press statement attributed to him, this occurred as a result of his disagreement with the Federal Government's policies on Aboriginal affairs and that he did not see eye to eye with the Chairman? Can the Minister say when he expects to be able to announce a replacement to this position?

Senator CAVANAGH -AU I know about this is what I read in a newspaper article. Whether it is a fact or not, I do not know. I have asked my Department for a report on it. Until we have received an official resignation no consideration will be given to a replacement. I do not know what motivated the mind of the professor or whether the reason stated by the Press was his reason for resignation. But if any further information comes to hand I will make it known to the honourable senator.
