Senator TOWNLEY -No doubt the Minister representing the Minister for Immigration has seen reports that following the Prime Minister's visit to China a significant number of Chinese migrants may be coming to Australia. Will this number be in addition to the migrants coming from other countries or instead of such people? How many people is it anticipated will be permitted to enter each year?

Senator Douglas McClelland (NEW SOUTH WALES) - I am unaware of the details sought by the honourable senator. I did see a statement in which the Prime Minister said that he would encourage the Chinese Government to give permission for people in China to come to Australia to visit and to meet their relatives. As to the numbers that would be involved, I am at a loss to know. I suggest that the question be placed on notice so that the information can be obtained.
