Senator WILLESEE asked the AttorneyGeneral, upon notice:

(1)   Has the Attorney-General seen reports that various pharmaceutical manufacturers intend to withhold supplies from certain chain stores which intend to sell these products at lower prices than charged by present retail outlets?

(2)   Will the Attorney-General take action to ensure that this price cutting and hence antiinflationary move by chain stores is not frustrated by any restrictive trade practices on the part of manufacturers?

Senator GREENWOOD - The answer to the honourable senator's question is as follows:

(1)   and (2) No. Information received by me is to the contrary effect and suggests that some pharmaceutical manufacturers at least appear to have decided to supply a wider range of their products to a wider range of retail outlets, including chain stores.
