Senator YOUNG (SOUTH AUSTRALIA) - I ask the Minister representing the Minister for Shipping and Transport: With the proposed introduction of a 35-hour week for members of the Australian Waterside Federation, will the Minister say what will be the increase in costs on the Australian waterfront and what effect these increased costs will have on shipping freights generally?

Senator COTTON - I cannot say what the effect of this will be except that I should imagine it will be to increase costs quite effectively. One can make the observation that Australia is a trading nation of some consequence - the tenth or eleventh largest in the world - and that therefore we are dependent indeed on efficiency and costs on our waterfront. All Australians therefore would have some concern about this problem.
