Senator WRIGHT I have an answer to a question previously asked by Senator Webster which, I think, was put on notice on Tuesday of this week. The honourable senator's question concerned the new building programme for schools announced by the Prime Minister in recent weeks. The answer provided to me is that discussions are proceeding with the States and independent school authorities about the administrative arrangements for the new programme of capital assistances for both government and independent schools which was announced by the Prime Minister on l l t h May 1972. It is the intention of the Government that funds for this programme will be available from 1st July 1973. The Government will bring down legislation in the Budget session and it proposes that projects, the construction of which commences on or after the day following passage of the legislation, will be eligible for consideration. It must be emphasised that eligibility for consideration does not carry any guarantee of approval and that a project which has been commenced before the funds are available will not be accorded any priority because of that fact. It will also be necessary for such a project to be acceptable to the standards committee which has yet to be appointed.
