Senator Douglas McClelland (NEW SOUTH WALES) asked the Minister representing the Treasurer, upon notice:

(1)   What was the amount involved in approvals granted for the whole of Australia, during the year 1971, for the construction of (a) houses, and (b) flats.

(2)   Of the total amount involved in (1) what was the amount in respect of (a) Sydney, (b) Newcastle, (c) Wollongong, (d) Melbourne, (e) Brisbane, (f) Adelaide, (g) Perth, and (h) Hobart.

(3)   What was the amount involved in approvals granted in the whole of Australia for the construction of 'other new buildings' (i.e. buildings excluding houses and flats in the calendar year 1971 for (a) private, and (b) Government purposes.

(4)   Of the total amount involved in 'other new buildings', how much related to 'Office Construction' for the whole of Australia.

(5)   Of the total amount involved in (3), what was the amount in respect of (a) Sydney, (b) Newcastle, (c) Wollongong, (d) Melbourne, (e) Brisbane, (f) Adelaide, (g) Perth, and (h) Hobart.

(6)   Of the total amount involved in (4), what was the amount in respect of (a) Sydney, (b) Newcastle, (c) Wollongong, (d) Melbourne, (e) Brisbane, (f) Adelaide, (g) Perth, and (h) Hobart.

Question (1): Value of houses and flats approved in Australia in Calendar year 1971:

Houses- $1,197,354,000

Flats- $317,891,000
