Senator FINDLEY (Victoria) (Honorary Minister) . - Much of the tunnelling work which is being done in Melbourne, and which has been done during the last few months, was done in Sydney years ago - I believe before Federation - at a cost of many thousands of pounds. The amount which is asked for the work in Melbourne is much larger than the amount required for the work which is being carried on in Sydney. The tunnelling work which was done in the latter city anterior to Federation saved such a considerable sum to the Department that it explains the disparity between the two votes on these Estimates.

Senator Millen - There is a big difference between undergrounding the wires and metallic circuits.

Senator Pearce - The work is being taken up in Melbourne at the stage which was reached in Sydney some years ago.
