Mr Bennett asked the Minister for Transport, upon notice:

With reference to the British Advanced Passenger Train project and reports that it will be operating commercially within three years, have any steps been taken to:

(a)   Evaluate the train under Australian conditions.

(b)   Test the train in Australia at an early date.

Mr Charles Jones - The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(a)   No.

(b)   Because the Advanced Passenger Train prototype would be subject to considerable test and evaluation in the United Kingdom before the train is put into serial production, a production train could not be available for test in Australia for several years.
