Mr Sinclair asked the Minister for Social Security, upon notice:

(1)   How many medical practitioners in each State charged fees below the common fee for most parts of the medical benefits schedule during each quarter from 1 January 1972.

(2)   Will he ensure that this information is included in any future press release on the common fee observance.

Mr Hayden - The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1)   and (2) The information requested is not available. The common fee observance statistics are based on a survey of claims processed by the principal medical benefits organisations in each State and relate only to fees charged for services. It is not possible under the present arrangements to include in the statement details of the number of medical practitioners concerned. The question of extraction of such information will be considered in conjunction with the introduction of the Government's universal health insurance program from 1 July 1974.
