Mr Lynch asked the Minister for Immigration, upon notice:

(1)   Did he in answer to my question No. 487 (Hansard, 31 May 1973, page 3037) affirm the validity of his statement on 28 December 1972 that the flow of skilled migrant workers, for whom there was an existing demand in Australian industry, would be fully sustained now and in the future.

(2)   Will he consult with the Minister for Labour and industry leaders to ascertain the extent of the existing shortage of skilled labour.

(3)   If not, is his statement of 28 December 1972 still valid.

Mr Grassby - The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1)   Yes.

(2)   The labour needs of Australian industry are the subject of continuing consultation with the Minister and Department of Labour the Immigration Planning Council (On which industry leaders and the trade unions are represented), State and other appropriate authorities.

(3)   The statement of 28 December 1972 is still valid.
