Mr Bourchier asked the Minister for Transport, upon notice:

(1)   Does the Government propose to improve public transport in both Melbourne and Sydney at a cost of hundreds of millions of dollars.

(2)   If so, will the Government give an undertaking to provide pro rata assistance in respect of public transport to larger provincial cities as a means of assisting decentralisation.

Mr Charles Jones - The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1)   The Government has approved in principle a scheme to provide two thirds of the cost of improving urban public transport in the State capital cities.

(2)   The Government has also undertaken to examine the needs of main provincial centres where populations exceed 100,000. Furthermore, the Government will consider supporting the improvement of public transport services in the corridors linking these provincial centres with major cities.
