Mr Graham (NORTH SYDNEY, NEW SOUTH WALES) asked the Minister for Defence, upon notice:

(1)   How many sightings were made in Australian, New Zealand or Oceanian waters of unidentified submariies during 1972.

(2)   Is it the intention of the Government to make public such information as may be available from time to time.

Mr Barnard (BASS, TASMANIA) (Minister for Defence) - The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1)   My Department does not have any record of any unidentified submarines in the areas mentioned.

(2)   Each report and its source would need to be considered separately.
