Mr Drummond (FORREST, WESTERN AUSTRALIA) asked the Prime Minister, upon notice:

(1)   Does he intend to visit Bunbury during tho forthcoming State by-election.

(2)   Did he state that he proposes to make Bunbury the growth centre of Western Australia.

(3)   If so, has he received any request from tho Premier of Western Australia designed to achieve this situation.

(4)   What are the proposals.

(5)   Has any investigation or cost/benefit study of any kind been concluded.

(6)   Will the proposals be announced prior to or after the by-election on 7th April 1973.


Mr Whitlam - The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1)   No.

(2)   The National Urban and Regional Development Authority has commissioned a study of 4 areas in Western Australia. These are Albany, Bunbury, Geraldton and the Perth North-West Corridor. The Authority is also conducting a number of studies of other regions in Australia. These studies are being conducted for a number of reasons, including, in some cases, an examination of the prospects for accelerated growth. Additionally, a jointly financed study of the Pilbara is being conducted with the Western Australian Government.

(3)   The Western Australian regional studies were undertaken after consultation between the National Urban and Regional Development Authority and the Western Australian Government

(4)   See (2) above.

(5)   Development studies on all areas initially selected were completed by Consultants on 31st March 1973. The National Urban and Regional Development Authority is at present assessing these reports.

(6)   The National Urban and Regional Development Authority will be still considering the reports at the by-election date.
