Mr Snedden asked the Prime Minister, upon notice: <1) How many Commonwealth employees were having deductions made from their salary on behalf of each of the Public Service Unions on the pay day nearest to (a) 1st January 1972, (b) 1st July 1972, (c) 1st January 1973, (d) 15th January 1973, (e) 1st February 1973 and (0 15th February 1973.

(2)   What amount was collected on behalf of each Union.

Mr Whitlam - The answer to the right honourable member's question is as follows:

(1)   and (2) I am informed that fewer than half of the permanent, temporary and exempt staff of departments are paid through the Treasury ADP payroll system! To obtain the information requested, details would need to be extracted from the payroll records of many departments and authorities. In addition some of the information is not now available. In the circumstances I am reluctant to authorise the time and expense involved in obtaining and collating the information.
