Mr Whitlam asked the Minister for Defence, upon notice:

(1)   What was the (a) value and (b) general nature of the defence orders placed by New Zealand in Australia and processed by his Depart- ; ment in 1970-71.

(2)   Does he know the (a) value and (b) general ; nature of any defence orders placed direct on industry in Australia by New Zealand in that year.


Mr Fairbairn - The answer to the hon ourable member's question is as follows: :" (la) The value of defence orders placed by New Zealand in Australia and processed by the Department of Supply in 1970-71 was $0.110m. (lb) Rifle spares and naval equipment. (2) It is known that orders totalling $1.277m have been placed by companies in New Zealand for communications equipment and vehicles.
