Mr HUTCHISON (Hindmarsh) . - I shall vote with the Government against the recommittal of the Bill, because I do not think it would conduce to economy of administration for the Commonwealth to take over the astronomical as well as the meteorological branch. At the present time some of the States are not carrying on astronomicalwork, but if the astronomical branch were taken over by the Commonwealth it would not be long before each State asked for the establishment of an observatory within its borders, which would increase expense. In my opinion, it is best for the Commonwealth to first reorganize the meteorological branch, and if later on it is found likely to be economical to take over the astronomical branch as well, that can. be done. I think that the Government are wise in separating the two Departments.
