1. Meeting of Senate.—The Senate met at ten a.m., pursuant to adjournment.—The President (Senator the Honorable Sir Alister McMullin) took the Chair.

4. Papers.—The following Paper was presented, by Command of His Excellency the Governor-General— Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs—Paper on the United Nations, dated May, 1966. The following Papers were presented, pursuant to Statute— Lands Acquisition Act—Right acquired for Department of the Interior purposes—Wollongong,
New South Wales. Services Trust Funds Act—Eighteenth Annual Report of the Services Canteens Trust Fund, together with the Auditor-General’s Report on accounts, for 1965.
5. N orthern T erritory Ordinances—Withholding of Assent—P apers—M inisterial Statement.—The Minister for Works (Senator Gorton), pursuant to Statute, laid upon the Table the following Papers— Northern Territory (Administration) Act— Agricultural Development Leases Ordinance 1965, together with statement of reasons for
withholding of assent, dated 12th May, 1966. Local Government Ordinance 1965, together with statement of reasons for withholding of assent, dated 12th May, 1966. Senator Gorton, by leave, made a statement relating thereto.
6. Loan (D efence) Bill 1966.—Message from the House of Representatives.—The following Message from the House of Representatives was received and read— Mr. President, Message No. 304.

19. Leave of Absence to all Senators during Adjournment.—The Minister for Supply (Senator Henty) moved, by leave—That leave of absence be granted to every Member of the Senate from the termination of the sitting this day to the day on which the Senate next meets. Question—put and passed.
20. N ext Meeting of the Senate.—The Minister for Supply (Senator Henty) moved—That the Senate, at its rising, adjourn till a day and hour to be fixed by the President, which time of meeting shall be notified to each Senator by telegram or letter. Question—put and passed.
21. Retirement of the Secretary, Joint H ouse D epartment.—The President informed the Senate that Mr. W. I. Emerton, Secretary, Joint House Department, would retire on 20th May, 1966. The President expressed appreciation of the services rendered to the Parliament by Mr. Emerton and wished him a happy retirement. The Minister for Supply (Senator Henty), the Leader of the Opposition (Senator McKenna) and the
Minister for Repatriation (Senator McKellar) supported the remarks of the President.
22. Adjournment.—The Senate adjourned at two minutes to four p.m. till a day and hour to be fixed by the President, which time of meeting shall be notified to each Senator by telegram or letter.
23. Attendance.—Present, all the Members except Senators Benn, Bull, Dittmer, Gair, Keeffe, Kennelly, Laught (on leave), Lillico (on leave), McManus, Morris, Ormonde (on leave), Sim and Turnbull.
