1. M eeting of Senate.—The Senate met at a quarter-past two p.m., pursuant to adjournment.—The President (Senator the Honorable Sir Alister McMullin) took the Chair.

3. Questions.—Questions on notice were answered.

4. M otion for A djournment, to D ebate M atter of U rgency.—Senator Willesee, in order to discuss a matter of urgency, viz.—“ The failure of the Government to proceed with the next stage of the Ord River Irrigation Project as requested by the Western Australian Government ”, moved—That the Senate, at its rising, adjourn till tomorrow at half-past ten a.m. Debate ensued. And the debate having reached the limit of three hours allowed by Standing Order 64, the Business of

the Day was called on.

5. P apers.—The following Paper was presented, by Command of His Excellency the Governor-General— Papua—Annual Report, for year 1964-65. The following Papers were presented, pursuant to Statute— Public Service Act—Appointments—Department—

6. Postponement.—Ordered—That Business of the Senate, Notice of Motion No. 1, standing in the namt, of Senator Wood, be postponed until the next day of sitting.

7. Suspension of Standing Order 68.—The Minister for Supply (Senator Henty), pursuant to notice, moved—That Standing Order 68 be suspended until the termination of the present period of sittings to enable new Business to be commenced after half-past ten o’clock at night. Debate ensued. Question—put and passed.

8. Customs T ariff Bill (N o. 2) 1966.—The Senate, according to Order, resolved itself into Committee for the further consideration of the Bill.

Pages 3 and 4, leave out sub-section (3.) of proposed section 17a., insert— “ (3.) If, in column 4 in the First Schedule, the letters ‘ NZ ’ are specified in relation to a rate of duty and those letters are followed by the letter ‘ (C) that rate of duty shall, in respect of goods entered for home consumption on and after the first day of January, One thousand nine hundred and sixty-seven, be read as a reference to that rate reduced by one-fifth.” . Suspension o f Standing Orders.—The Minister for Supply (Senator Henty), pursuant to contingent notice, moved—That so much of the Standing Orders be suspended as would prevent the Bill being passed through all its stages without delay. Question—put and passed. On the motion of Senator Henty the Bill was read a first time. Senator Henty moved—That this Bill be now read a second time. On the motion of Senator McKenna the debate was adjourned. Ordered—That the resumption of the debate be an Order of the Day for the next day of sitting.

And it being 11.30 p.m.—

18. Adjournment.—The President, under Sessional Order, put the Question—That the Senate do now adjourn. Debate ensued.
