1. MEETING OF SENATE.-The Senate met at three p.m., pursuant to adjournment.-The President (Senator the Honorable Sir Alister McMullin) took the Chair.


3. QUESTIONS.-Questions on notice were answered.

5. MARRIAGE BILL 1961.-0rder of the Day read for the adjourned debate on the Question-That the Bill be now read a second time. Debate resumed. Question-put and passed. Bill read a second time. The Senate, according to Order, resolved itself into Committee for the consideration of the Bill.

Bill, by leave, taken a Part at a time. Part I. (clauses 1 to 9) read-

Senator Hannan moved an amendment, viz.-Page 2. clause 5, sub-clause (1.), after line 34, insert " "' marriage' means the union of one man with one woman for life to the exclusion of all others. such union being contracted in the manner provided in this Act;". Debate ensued. Senator Hannan, by leave, amended his proposed amendment to read-P~i.gc 2, ciau~e 5, sub-cbu~c ( l.),

after line 34, insert-"' marriage' means the voluntary union of one man with one woman for life to the cxclu:;ion of all others ; ". Debate continued.

Question-That the words proposed to be inserted be inserted-put.

And it being 10.30 p.m.-The Temporary Chairman of Committees (Senator Anderson), under Sessional Order, put the Question-That he do leave the Chair and report to the Senate. Question-resolved in the affirmative.

The President resumed the Chair; and Senator Anderson reported accordingly.

6. ADJOVRNMENT.-The President, under Sessional Order, put the Question-That the Senate do now adjourn. Debate ensued. Question-resolved in the affirmative. The Senate adjourned at nine minutes to eleven p.m. till to-morrow at three p.m.
