1. Meeting of Senate.—The Senate met at three p.m., pursuant to adjournment.—The President (Senator the Honorable A. M. McMullin) took the Chair.

Public Service Arbitration Act—Determinations by the Arbitrator, &c.—1953—
No. 61—Australian Journalists’ Association. No. 62—Professional Radio Employees’ Institute of Australasia ; and Amalgamated-Society of Carpenters and Joiners of Australia. 5. Standing Orders Committee.—The Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator O’Sullivan) moved, by leave—That the Leader of the Government in the Senate be appointed to fill the vacancy on the Standing.Orders Committee. Question—put and passed.
6. Service and E xecution of P rocess Bill 1953.—Message from the House of Representatives.—The following Message from the House of Representatives was received and read :— Mr . P resident, Message No. 242.
The House of Representatives returns to the Senate -the Bill intituled “ A Bill for an Act to amend the 1 Service and Execution of Process Act 1901-1950 ’ ”, and acquaints the Senate that the House of Representatives has agreed to the Bill without amendment.

7. States Grants (Special F inancial Assistance) Bill 1953;—Message from the House of Representatives.—The following Message from the House of Representatives was received and read :— Mr . P resident, ’ Message No. 240.
The House of Representatives transmits to the Senate a Bill intituled “ A Bill for an Act to grant and apply out of the Consolidated Revenue Fund sums for the purpose of Financial Assistance to the States ”, in which it desires the concurrence of the Senate.

Question—put and passed. On the motion of the Minister for National Development (Senator Spooner) the Bill was read a first time. Senator Spooner moved—That the Bill be now read a second time.
On the motion of Senator McKenna the debate was adjourned. Ordered—That the resumption of the debate be an Order of the Day for the -next day -of sitting. F.2176.

The House of Representatives transmits to the Senate a Bill intituled “ A Bill for an Act . to amend the ‘ Income Tax and Social Services Contribution Assessment Act 1936-1952 ’, as amended by the ‘ Taxation Administration Act 1953 ’ and by the-' Income Tax and Social Services Contribution Assessment Act 1953 ’ ”, in which it desires the concurrence of the Senate.

The Senate, according to Order, resolved itself into Committee for the consideration of the Bill.

And it being 11 p.m.—The Temporary Chairman (Senator Wood), under Sessional Order, put the Question—That he do leave the Chair and report to the Senate— Which Question was negatived.
Debate continued. Bill agreed to. Bill to be reported without amendment.
The Deputy-President resumed the Chair; and the Temporary Chairman of Committees (Senator â Wood) reported accordingly. On the motion of the Minister for Repatriation (Senator Cooper) the Report from the Committee was adopted, and the Bill read a third time.
13. Adjournment:—The Senate adjourned at three minutes past eleven p.m. till to-morrow at eleven a.m.
