1. Meeting of Senate.—The Senate met at three p.m., pursuant to adjournment.—The President ■ (Senator the Honorable A. M. McMullin) took the Chair. .

2. PRAYERS. ' '

3. Questions.—Questions on notice were answered.

4. P apers.—The following Papers were presented, pursuant to Statute— .

Lands Acquisition Act—Land acquired for Commonwealth purposes—Portland, Victoria. ; Norfolk Island Act—Ordinance—1953—No. 4—Norfolk Island Public Hall. Public Service Act^— Appointments—Department— Interior—W. D. Kennedy.

Shipping and Transport—J. E. Dobson, B. Walker.

5. J oint Committee on the Broadcasting of P arliamentary Proceedings.—Resignation of Member.— The President announced the receipt of a letter from Senator Maher resigning as a Member of the Joint Committee on the Broadcasting of Parliamentary Proceedings. . . Appointment to vacancy.—The Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator O’Sullivan) moved, by leave—.

That, in accordance with the provisions of the Parliamentary Proceedings Broadcasting Act 1946, Senator Paltridge be apppointed to fill the vacancy now existing on the Joint Committee on the Broadcasting of Parliamentary Proceedings. · .

Question—put and passed. . ■

6. E stimates and Budget P apers 1953-54.—Order of the Day read for the adjourned debate on the motion by the Minister 'for National Development (Senator Spooner), viz.—That the Papers -be printed. , ' ,

Adjournment negatived.—The President, under Sessional Order, put the Question—That the Senate do now adjourn. AVhich Question was negatived. . "

Debate continued. Ordered—That the debate be adjourned till the next day of sitting, and that Senator Robertson have leave to continue her speech on the resumption of the debate.

7. Adjournment.—The Senate adjourned at twenty-six minutes past eleven p.m. till to-morrow at ' eleven a.m.

8. Attendance.—Present, all the Members except Senators Devlin and Hendrickson. .
