1. Meeting of Senate.—The Senate met at three p.m., pursuant to adjournment.—The President '(Senator the Honorable A. M. McMullin) took the Chair. ·

3. Senator Sworn.—James Philip Toohey, Senator for the State of South Australia, made and subscribed the Oath of Allegiance at the Table, pursuant to the Commonwealth of Australia Constitution Act.
4. P etitions.—Petitions praying that action be taken to amend the Superannuation Act to rectify an . alleged injustice were presented by Senator Cooke (24 signatures), Senator Critchley (88 signatures) and Senator Hendrickson (146 signatures). Petitions severally received. . , â
5. Questions.—Questions on notice were answered. .
6. Temporary Chairmen oe Committees.—The President read and laid on the Table his Warrant appointing Senators Pearson and Wood to act as Temporary Chairmen of Committees, as follows :— : ' Pursuant to Standing Order No. 28a, I hereby nominate Senators R. W. Pearson and I. A. C. Wood to act as Temporary Chairmen of Committees when requested so to do by the Chairman of

9. Standing Committees.—Resignation of Member.—The President announced the receipt of a letter from Senator Maher resigning as a Member of the Standing Orders Committee and the Regulations and Ordinances Committee.

R egulations and Ordinances Committee.—The President reported the receipt of a letter from the Leader of the Government in the Senate nominating, in accordance with Standing Order 36a, Senator Seward to fill the vacancy existing on the Standing Committee on Regulations and , Ordinances. The Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator O’Sullivan) moved, by leave—That Senator Seward,
having been duly nominated in accordance with Standing Order 36a, be appointed to fill the vacancy now existing on the Standing Committee on Regulations and Ordinances. . â . Question—put and passed.

The House of Representatives acquaints the Senate that, in accordance with the provisions of the Parliamentary Proceedings Broadcasting Act 1946, Mr. Bryson, a Member of the House of Representatives, has been appointed a member of the Joint Committee on the Broadcasting of Parliamentary Proceedings in the place of Mr. Rosevear, deceased. â

13. Pearl Fisheries Bill (No. 2) 1953.—Message from the House of Representatives.—The following Message from the House of Representatives was received and read :— . Mr. President, Message- N o. 229.
The House of Representatives .transmits to the Senate a Bill intituled “ A Bill for an Act to amend the ‘Pearl Fisheries Act 1952’, as amended, by. the ‘ Pearl Fisheries Act 1953.’ ”, in which it ' desires the concurrence of the Senate. .
