1. Meeting of Senate.—The Senate met at eleven a.m., pursuant to adjournment.- . (Senator the Honorable A. M. McMullin) took the Chair.

Public Works Committee—Resignation of Member:—The President announced the receipt from Senator Reid of a letter resigning his place as a Member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Works. Appointment to vacancy.—The Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator O’Sullivan) moved, by leave—
That, in accordance with the provisions of the Public Works Committee Act 1913-1951, Senator Maher be appointed to fill the vacancy now existing on the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Works. . Question—put and passed.
5. R egulations and Ordinances Committee.—The President reported the receipt of a letter from the Leader of the Government in the Senate nominating, in accordance with Standing Order 36a, Senator Vincent to fill the vacancy existing on the Standing Committee on Regulations and Ordinances. The Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator O’Sullivan) moved, by leave—That Senator Vincent,
having been duly nominated in accordance with Standing Order 36a, be appointed to fill the vacancy now existing on the Standing Committee on Regulations and Ordinances. Question—put and passed.
6. Commonwealth Observatory Trust F und B ill 1953.—The Minister for Shipping and Transport (Senator McLeay), pursuant to notice, moved—That leave be given to introduce a Bill for an Act relating to the Establishment of a Trust Fund for the purposes of the Commonwealth Observatory in the Australian Capital Territory. Question—put and passed. . Bill presented, and on the motion of Senator McLeay read a first time. Suspension of Standing Orders.—The Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator O’Sullivan), pursuant
to contingent notice, moved—That so much of the Standing Orders be suspended as would prevent the Bill being passed through its remaining stages without delay. Question—put and passed. Senator McLeay moved·—That the Bill be now read a second time. On the motion of Senator McKenna the debate was adjourned.
