WEDNESDAY, 2 5 t h MARCH, 1953.
1. Meeting of Senate.—The Senate met at three p.m., pursuant to adjournment.—The Deputy President (Senator G. J. Rankin) took the Chair. '
2. PRAYERS.
3. Death of Queen Mary.—The Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator O’Sullivan) announced with deep regret the death of Her Majesty Queen Mary, and moved, by leave—That the following Address be transmitted through His Excellency the Governor-General to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second:—
“ To the Queen’s Most E xcellent Majesty : Most Gracious Sovereign : We, the Members of the Senate of the Commonwealth of Australia, in Parliament assembled, have received with heartfelt sorrow the news of the death of Your August Grandmother, Her Majesty Queen Mary.
We remember with grateful affection the love which the late Queen inspired in all her peoples and we extend to Your Majesty and to the other members of the Royal Family our profound and most loving sympathy in this grievous loss.” And the motion having been seconded by the Leader of the Opposition (Senator McKenna), and
supported by the Minister for Repatriation (Senator Cooper)— And all Senators present having risen, in silence— Question—passed. .
4. Next Meeting of the Senate.—The Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator O’Sullivan) moved— That the Senate, at its rising, adjourn till to-morrow at ten a.m. Question—put and passed. .
5. Adjournment as Mark of R espect.—The Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator O’Sullivan) moved—That, as a mark of respect to the memory of Her late Majesty Queen Mary, the Senate do now adjourn. Question—put and passed. The Senate adjourned at ten minutes past three p.m. till to-morrow at ten a.m.
6. Attendance.—Present, all the Members except Senators Aylett, Benn, Devlin (on leave), Finlay, Fraser (on leave), Maher, Mattner (on leave), Ryan (on leave) and Seward.
