1. Meeting of Senate.—The Senate met at three p.m., pursuant to adjournment.—The Deputy President (Senator G. J. Rankin) took the Chair.

4. P apers.—The following Papers were presented, pursuant to Statute— Coal Industry Act—Joint Coal Board—Fifth Annual Report, and Auditor-General’s report on accounts, for year 1951-52'. Commonwealth Railways Act—Report on Commonwealth Railways operations for year 1951-52. Lands Acquisition Act—Land acquired for Postal purposes—Tuncurry, New South Wales. . Public Service Act—Appointments—Department—■

5. Leave of Absence.—The Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator O’Sullivan) moved, by leave— That leave of absence for one month be granted to Senator Mattner on account of illness. Question—put and passed.

6. Wool Use P romotion Bill 1953.—Message from the House of Representatives.—The following Message from the House of Representatives was received and read :— Mb. President, Message No. 198.

The House of Representatives transmits to the Senate a Bill intituled “ A B ill fo r an Act to make jwovision fo r Improving the Production and Increasing the Use of Wool, and fo r purposes connected therewith ”, in which it desires the concurrence of the Senate. Archie G. Cameron,

Suspension o f Standing Orders.—The Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator O’Sullivan), pursuant to contingent notice, moved—That so much of the Standing Orders be suspended as would prevent the Bill being passed through all its stages without delay. Question—put and passed. _

On the motion of the Minister for Shipping and Transport (Senator McLeay) the Bill was read a first time. Senator McLeay moved—That the Bill be now read a second time. On the motion of Senator Courtice the debate was adjourned. Ordered—That the resumption of the debate be an Order of the Day for the next day of sitting.

7. Egg Export Control Bill 1953.—Message from the House o f Representatives.—The following Message from the House of Representatives was received and read :— Mr. President, Message No. 199.

The House of Representatives transmits to the Senate a Bill intituled “ A B ill fo r an Act to amend the ‘ Egg .Export Control Act 1947-1951 ’ ”, in which it desires the concurrence of the Senate. Archie G. Cameron,

9. Adjournment.—The Deputy President, under Sessional Order, put the Question—That the Senate do now adjourn. Debate ensued. Question—resolved in the affirmative. .

The Senate adjourned at eight minutes to eleven p.m. till to-morrow at three p.m.

10. Attendance.—Present, all the Members except Senators Arnold, Cormack, Devlin (on leave), Finlay, Fraser (on leave), Gorton, Mattner (on leave), Ryan (on leave) and Wright.
