1. Meeting of Senate.—The Senate met at three p.m., pursuant to adjournment.—The President (Senator the Honorable Gordon Brown) took the Chair. ,

3. Governor-General’s Message—Assent to Bills.—The following Message from His Excellency the Governor-General was presented, and the same was read by the President :·—

Proposed Laws intituled :— “ Loan Act 1950 ” “ Post and Telegraph Rates Act 1950 ” as finally passed by the Senate and the House of Representatives of the Commonwealth, having been presented to the Governor-General for the Royal Assent, His Excellency has, in the name and on behalf of His Majesty, assented to the said Laws.

4. Questions.—Questions on notice were answered.

6. Order of the Day Discharged.—Ordered, on the motion of the Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator O’Sullivan)—That the following Order of the Day, Government Business, be discharged :â — Foreign Affairs—Ministerial Statement (9th March, 1950)—Paper.—Adjourned debate on the ' motion that the Paper be printed.
7. Suspension of Standing Order No. 68.—The Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator O’Sullivan) moved—That Standing Order No. 68 be suspended up to and including Friday, 22nd December, 1950, to enable new Business to be commenced after half-past ten o’clock at night. Question—put and passed, there being present an absolute majority of the whole number of Senators,
and no dissentient voice.

9. I llness of the R ight H onorable J. B. Chifley.—The Minister for Trade and Customs (Senator O’Sullivan), by leave, made reference to the illness of the Right Honorable J. B. Chifley, Leader of the Opposition in the House of Representatives, and suggested that a telegram of sympathy be sent to him. Senator Ashley, by leave, made similar references, which were supported by the President, who
undertook to send the telegram.
10. Australian Soldiers’ R epatriation Bill 1950.—Order of the Day read for the adjourned debate on the Question—That the Bill be now read a second time. Debate resumed. Question—put and passed.
Bill read a second time. The Senate, according to Order, resolved itself into Committee for the consideration of the Bill.
In the Committee.
Bill, by leave, taken as a whole, and agreed to. Bill to be reported without amendment.
The Deputy-President resumed the Chair; and the Temporary Chairman of Committees (Senator Nash) reported accordingly. On the motion of the Minister for Repatriation (Senator Cooper) the Report from the Committee was adopted, and the Bill read a third time. 1
11. I ncome Tax and Social Services Contribution Assessment Bill 1950.—Message from the House — of Representatives.—The following Message from the House of Representatives was received and read :—

The House of Representatives transmits to the Senate a Bill intituled “ A Bill for an Act to amend the ‘Income Tax Assessment Act 1936-1949 ’, to repeal the ‘Social Services Contribution Act 1945-1949’ and the ‘Social Services Contribution Assessment Act 1945-1948 ’, and for other purposes”, in which it desires the concurrence of the Senate.

On the motion of the Minister for Social Services (Senator Spooner) the Bill was read a first time. Senator Spooner moved—That the Bill be now read a second time. On the motion of Senator Ashley the debate was adjourned. Ordered—That the resumption of the debate be an Order of the Day for the next day of sitting,

12. Income Tax and Social Services Contribution Bill 1950.—Message from the House of Representatives.—The following Message from the House of Representatives was received and re a d :—
